Meghalaya, the 21st state of the Indian Union, was declared a full fledged
state on January 21st ,1972. Meghalaya is also called the Scotland of East.
It is endowed with a rich variety of natural beauty. Of the 17,000 species
of orchids in the world, about 1,250 exit in India, of which nearly 300 are
found in Meghalaya. Meghalaya is also rich in wildlife. It is the home of a
variety of animals and birds. The scenic beauty and the deep green forests
hills, tree covered slopes, rippling waterfalls, silent lakes, mountain
springs, moving mist and multitudes of flora and fauna including rare and
unique species make the exquisite panorama of Meghalaya. Shillong - the
capital of Meghalaya is also the center-point located at an altitude of 1496
meters above sea level.

Location
Situated between 25 and 26.15 degree north latitude and 89.45 and 92.47
degree east longitude, Meghalaya is bordered in the North and East by Assam
and South by Bangladesh. The neighbouring states are Nagaland, Manipur
Mizoram, Tripura and Assam.
Climate-Season
MMeghalaya dwells in different moods at different points of times. She has
four well defined seasons- summer, monsoon, winter and spring. It has a mild
and moderate climate in summer and extreme cold in winter.
Important Tourist Destinations in Meghalaya
Shillong
One of the oldest outpost of the British in the North East, it has got an
ideal climate for the holidayers throughout the year. Some of the places
worth seeing in and around include Shillong peak, Ward's Lake, Umiam Lake,
State Museum, Butterfly Museum, Elephant Falls and Golf Course etc.
Shillong Peak
An ideal picnic spot, 10 kms from the city,1965 meters above sea level, it
is also the highest point in the state. In the evening the city light below
appears like a star - studded abyss.
Ward's Lake
Located in the heart of the city, popular for short garden walks and
boating, celebrated its centenary recently.
Umiam Lake
Umian Khwan (Barapani), 17 Kms from Shillong, offers water sports
facilities including sailing, water skiing, water scooter. Nehru Park is an
ideal quiet holiday resort.
State Museum
Located at the state Central Library complex, visitors can get a glimpse of
the lifestyle and heritage of the people.
Golf Course
The third oldest golf course in India. Developed in 1889 as a nine hole
course, it was later converted to 18 holes in 1924. It is termed as the
'Gleneagle of the East' by the United States Golf Association Library and
Museum.
Cherapunjee
Cherapunjee is 56 Kms from Shillong, situated in one of the rainest rain
-belt in the world , 1300 meters above sea level. The lovely town is also
famous for its limestone caves and orange honey. It also has the oldest
Presbyterian Church and also an establishment of the Ramkrishna Mission.
Known for its beautiful limestones caves, it receives the world's heaviest
rainfall.
Tura
The center of Gora Culture. Some places to visit in and around Tura are:
Balpakram: A National Wildlife Park, is about
167 kms from Tura, also known as the abode of perpetual winds.
Siju Calves: The famous limestones caves of
Siju are located near Naphak Lake and Simsang Games Reserve. The formation
of stalagmites and stalactites in these caves resemble those of the Blue
Grotto in the Isle of Capri.

Itinerary :
SHILLONG - KAZIRRANGA-GUWAHATI (7 NTS/8 DAYS)
DAY 01: GUWAHATI -SHILLONG
Upon arrival, transfer to Shillong (3hrs.).Day at leisure. Overnight at
hotel Pegasus Crown/similar.
DAY 02: SHILLONG
After breakfast, leave for halfday sightseeing covers Elephanta peak, Lady
Hydri Park, Wards Lake, ZSt.Paul's cathedral and 18 hole golf course.
Overnight at hotel.
DAY 03: SHILLONG
Drive to Cherrapunjee (56kms.), famed for being the wettest place in the
world. After a drive of two hours amid pine trees and mists we reach
chereapunjee. It posseeses some exotic waterfalls and lime stone caves.
There we visit Nokhalik ai falls, being the world's fourth tallest
waterfall, Mawsamai falls, Thangkharang park and Mawsmai cave, which is one
of the 100 odd lime stone caves in Meghalaya. Back to Shillong in the
evening and Overnight at hotel.
DAY 04: SHILLONG-KAZIRANGA
Check out of the hotel. On the way to Kaziranga, enjoy water sports on
Barapani Lake. Then after lunch, transfer to Kaziranga National Park (312
kms./approx 7hrs.drive), the home of the great Indian one horned Rhinoceros.
We check into hotel. Overnight at hotel.
DAY 05: KAZIRANGA
We start our Jungle safari on elephant back early in the morning in the
central range of the Park for one hour. Afterwards, back to hotel. After
breakfast, we take you deep inside the central range of the Park in a Jeep.
Again in the late afternoon, we take inside the central range for a sunset
view of the Park. Overnight at hotel Wild Grass/similar.
DAY 06: KAZIRANGA- GUWAHATI
After breakfast, check out of the hotel and reach at Guwahati.
DAY 07: GUWAHATI
After breakfast, lave for half day sightseeing at Guwahati covering
Kamakhya Temple, Tirupati Balaji Temple, Kalashetra, Raj Bhawan, Local
markets etc. Overnight at hotel.
DAY 08: GUWAHATI DEPARPTPURE
After breakfast, check ou of the hotel and transfer to airport/railwayy
station to your onward destination.
